Sid Tapia - LET IT SHINE

Sydney artist, friend of MTN and all-round nice guy Sid Tapia recently teamed up with Sydney Water and Marrickville Council to complete the Let It Shine wall. His canvas was a 75 square metre wall on a pump house just north of Sydenham Station. The building was thrashed, and was in much need of some drastic change. As a wall which is also visible to passing trains, it's sure to brighten up the commute of many Sydney-siders. The mural features a character inspired by his young daughter, and includes balloons, marked with the names of well respected artists (predominantly inner-west) who have inspired Sid. Sydney Water has used this project as a trial to improve local communities by providing relevant murals to revamp amenities which were previously considered an eyesore by those living near it and travelling past it every day. The initiative is said to be more cost effective than removing graffiti, and will be more appreciated by the community than a grey building would. Sid spent six and a half days working away at the wall, and left behind something which will hopefully stand for a long time as a representation of the art scene in Sydney's Inner West. The initiative seems to be a positive sign of the attitude towards quality graffiti and street art in Sydney. Let's hope it's the first of many projects just like it. Take a look at the photos we received from Sid, as well as a time lapse Sid put together.
