The Galeries pays tribute to some of the most iconic movie quotes of a generation revealing its most dynamic installation to date in public art space Lane Four.
Celebrating much-loved one-liners and favourite quips in a larger-than-life three-dimensional mural hand painted mural used MTN, Posca and Krink paint and markers, multimedia artist Tania Debono, better known as TheWriting explores the power of words through the context of film in “based on a true story”
. Whether remembered for their wisdom or witt each quote is instantly recognisable and carries with it the timeless and fond sentiment of a community who have grown up with the films of the 80s and 90s such as Clueless, Pulp Fiction, Napolean Dynamite and Flashdance.
Debono knows a good quote when she hears one. Famed for her typography-based art form, Tania’s simplistic aesthetic and bold signature font have seen her immortalising words since TheWriting’s inception in 2012 Swiftly gaining momentum on social media, TheWriting has garnered over 85k global followers, counting The New York Times, P.Diddy, Another Magazine and Miranda Kerr amongst her fans. It was through this platform that Debono was able to draw inspiration for the art work, calling on her followers, The Galeries’ customers, social influencers and the wider community to contribute to the piece.
The result brings together the pastimes of penmanship and film with modern technology and innovation in what can only be described as new-age art.
With its distinct mix of retailers, The Galeries is a cultural and lifestyle destination for fashion, art and music. Lane Four is an ongoing project which aims to promote and support cutting edge artists connecting with The Galeries’ customers through a mutual appreciation for creative expression. “based on a true story”
is no exception; TheWriting’s vision of adored catchphrases is a vibrant and unexpected explosion of laughs, reflection, tears and smiles for visitors.
In the words of Dead Poet Society’s John Keating; “No matter what anybody tells you, words and ideas can change the world.”
